It took me a long while to get into this book, as the chapters (especially at the beginning) are very short, and it takes a long time for the story to really get going. It brought me up short when I was in severe depressionI had been complaining to my older son and he recommended this book. The lovers are doomed from the beginning and the family is shattered by the war and by a family member's collaboration with the Nazis. It's like reading about someone who is greatly affecting the people of today.
